CSA FAQs

Please use this page as a reference, if you'd like to consider joining our CSA in the future. As of Spring 2018, we are not yet in operation in Summit County. We will post updates here, as things progress!

FAQs

Is Schneider’s Hop Haus Certified Organic?

We are not certified organic. The certification and renewal processes are time consuming and costly. At this stage of the game, we are better able to use those resources to strengthen the farm’s community offerings and infrastructure. We do, however, adhere to the strict guidelines of organic farming. If you’d like more information about how we adhere to organic farming practices, utilize beneficial insects, and companion planting on our farm, please feel free to ask!

Who is this CSA for?

It is for YOU! This CSA is designed to give busy families a sense of community in agriculture and a sort of ‘farmer’s market’ experience. It is our hope that your family will have a renewed sense of confidence about where their food is coming from through the Hop Haus CSA. If you kids leave our farm with dirt under their fingernails and a deeper sense of how a recent rainstorm or sunny streak impacted their local food supply, we are on the right track! If your participation in the Hop Haus CSA compliments your family table with foods, rich in nutrients, full of local flare, we have reached our goal!

What is different from the 2015 CSA?

The 2016 CSA will be extended for three additional weeks beyond the 2015 CSA! YAY!

The 2015 CSA was quite an experiment for our farm and household. For those who took the journey along with us (thank you!), you know that a lot of learning and growing took place.  As growers, we weren’t dazzled by the quality of crops that met the CSA shares on a great many weeks. I don’t think I’m over-stepping if I say that most Ohio farmers would agree that last season brought with it a great many challenges.

To augment weather and pest damage to our greens this year, they are going to start out right away in our very first pup hoop house! The hoop house will allow for earlier growth & harvest and more consistent growing conditions for our greens. Our second pup hoop house will contain tomatoes and peppers. These crops did not take the transition from swimming to drought very well last year. We invested a great deal of time researching hoop houses over the winter. We are confident that these hoop houses will help us to bring our best to you!

Additionally, we’d like to strengthen the sense of community in our CSA this season. Once a week, we’re hosting a “Gather with Us Friday”. You and your family are invited (not required) to join in the fun of gathering the CSA harvest for the week. This will be a wonderful time for everyone to get their hands in the dirt, to tend  family plots, and to visit with other CSA members. “Gather With Us Friday” times will be followed by the weekly pickup.  By moving from a morning pickup to an afternoon/evening pickup, we hope to span both the folks that are at home through out the day and the folks that are transiting from work to home. You will all have your fresh produce in hand for weekend meals and adventures! Last year, our sons truly enjoyed visiting with you all (and your kiddos) when you came for pickup. We’d like to open the pickup window to the new timeframe in hopes that any and all family members that would like to stop through are able to do so.

Another change that you will see as this season kicks off will be the addition of a rain water collection and irrigation system for the CSA garden. The water source for the CSA garden will come straight from the clouds! We think this will be a wonderful way to strengthen our commitment to sustainable agriculture for you, our CSA Shareholders, and for our community. We are coordinating with the National Resource Conservation Service to apply for grants that will bring one large hoop house and an awesome irrigation delivery system to the CSA garden over the next twelve months. These things take some time, so for 2016, you can look for pup hoop houses and “Schneider’d” irrigation system!

What is the same as the 2015 CSA?

In 2016, we will continue our commitment to you and your families to grow crops sustainably, organically, sensibly.  We stand by our goal to bring the healthiest fruits and vegetables possible to your family all-the-while protecting and enriching the land where our farm sits for future generations and a healthier contribution to the environment!  To this, we will continue educate ourselves, to strengthen our farm’s infrastructure, and fortify our relationship with some remarkable area farms that do not run a CSA of their own. All of the farms featured in our CSA are family owned and operated, just as before!

Morning's Quiet

This morning I spent some time, just me, my eggs and coffee, the singing birds, and The Word. Self care looks different for everyone, but an ounce of quiet is soothing to my maternal chapter. I read again the tale of Jesus feeding the crowd of five thousand men. We don't know how many women and children were there, but the total sounds something like the number that is gathered at my family reunions. :) I find it hard, to make sure to save space for my care and well being. It doesn't take long. Maybe fifteen minutes in the word. Maybe an hour at the gym. Maybe a dinner with my friend. It is so hard for me to say "I have time for that". I can say it is my family, my children, or my husband, but that is me allowing myself to come last. Whether it is regular teeth cleanings or a cup-topping visit with a soul sister, I need to take care of myself, I need to be honest about what works for me, if I am to take care of my family in the very best way. Today, before I head o

First Lilly

Growing up, my family would take long drives to southern Ohio and Appalachia to visit family. The stationwagon logged a great many miles on those country roads and I always admired the lilies adorning the side of the road. The splashes of orange were cheerful and bright, welcoming visitors, so it seemed. Last year, when we moved to the cottage, I swooned over the orange lilies up along the road. While some view them as ordinary or plain, to me they have always been something I'd like to add to the front of the property, until now. The cottage came ready to bloom! This afternoon, as we pulled from the drive, intent on a trip to take our small tribe to visit cousins, I noticed that the very first lilly had blossomed! I smiled and quietly made note, as the car was filled with the chatted and rustle that begets a family road trip. I'm sure that when we return home, the sun will have beckoned forth lilies innumerable. I can't wait to see their smiling orange hues, laced with y

Women in Business

I was just listening to a podcast about women in business featuring CoCo Chanel. I'm fascinated by fashion. I can't afford high fashion right now and I cannot maintain high fashion right now, but the allure and the fluidity of high fashion intrigue me. In the interest of dusting off my business brain, I thought the podcast may inspire. A familiar voice casually led my mind as I set to scrubbing the kitchen sink, responding to emails and wiping the baseboards. All glamorous stuff, I assure you. To hear of the humble beginnings of Coco Chanel and the manner in which she navigated the early financial hurdles of starting a business, the personal branding tips offered, the growth perspective, it was some what predictable, but worth hearing. The narrative meandered through the chronological sequence of Coco's life and business choices until it reached war time Europe. The narrator's tone was a bit more reserved, as I would expect from was time discussion. I come from a g
